You Are A

Hard Abstract Supporter

A Hard Abstract Supporter of the death penalty is somebody who supports capital punishment in the abstract. He or she is also willing to attend the execution of a person convicted of a "heinous" crime, a serial killer who was convicted of the torture and murder of a small child.

You showed your support for the death penalty by reporting that at least one method of execution was okay with you. You were selected to serve on a death penalty jury. During the first vote, you voted for the death penalty. Others favored life in prison. In the end, however, all 12 jurors recommended the death penalty. The judge sentenced the man you convicted to death. Later, you are invited to attend the man's execution. You indicated that you were likely to attend. However, while you are willing to watch the killing of the man you convicted, you drew the line at actually killing him yourself.

You are classified as 'hard' because you recommended his death and are willing to watch him die. But this remains somewhat 'abstract' because you want somebody else to do the actual killing.

In the Death Penalty Study, 32.9% of the people were (like you) Hard Abstract Supporters. This was the largest group of people in the study. On the jury in the study, 76.4% of Hard Abstract Supporters (like you) voted for the death penalty on the first round of voting.
