Using quotas, the researchers controlled for four major ethnic  groups, based on U.S. Census data. The percentages of White, Asian American, African American, and Hispanic Americans (Latino/Latina/Latinx) were matched to percentages in the larger population. Whites tend to favor the death penalty. Persons of color tend to oppose the death penalty.
