Comparing 'Mushy' Opinions to Intended Acts

Death Penalty Opinions of Execution Actors

Four major groups of execution actors were identified in the Death Penalty Study.* These groupings are based on intended actions regarding executions, rather than abstract opinions about capital punishment. For each of the four groups, support of the death penalty is higher for the biased version of the opinion question.

Even among Abolitionists (who oppose all forms of execution), nearly a quarter support the death penalty when asked the biased version. Even when asked the unbiased version, 14% of abolitionists still said they support the death penalty for murder.

*Note that Absolute Abolitionists and De Facto Abolitionists are grouped together because neither group supports any method of execution.
